Bombus pascuorum

  • Scientific name: Bombus pascuorum
  • Common name: 'common carder bee
  • Dimension: 9-15 mm
  • Habitat: a wide variety of environments, such as open spaces, woods, very often also in urban areas, parks and gardens
  • Behavior: 'social species
  • Collective behavior: polylectic
  • Nest: in the ground, in the nests of small mammals or on the surface of the soil under cushions of moss and tufts of grass
  • Parasitized by: Bombus campestris
  • Red list of bees in Switzerland: not endangered

Interesting Facts:

Most people are familiar with bumblebees, but many don't know that they belong to the wild bee group. Common carder bee colonies generally consist of 30-40 individuals, but can reach up to 130. This species has a very long period of activity and can sometimes be observed until November.
